Symantec Recent Phishing Activity Report


Phishing in the virtual world is dangerous. Cybercriminals continue to seek ways to extract sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details.
 

Symantec has recently observed a phishing site that uses a number of new tricks including posing as a famous software company to offer software products at discount prices.
 

Even more dangerous is another tactic used by the attacker to lure a larger number of users. This includes making a phishing site hosted on new domain names registered are indexed in several popular search engines and with a high page rank. In addition, phishing page also contains a fake security seals at the bottom of the page.
 

In addition to the example image, the user is prompted to enter their billing information, personal information and credit card details to complete their purchase.  

The requested personal information including user's email address and telephone number. If there are users who are victims of these phishing sites, the attacker will successfully steal their personal information for profit.
 

As in the report sent to the Ghiboo, Monday (12 / 9), Symantec advised Internet users to perform the following best practices to avoid becoming victims of phishing attacks :
  • Do not click on suspicious links in email messages.
  • Avoid giving personal information when answering email.

  • Never enter personal information on the page or pop-up screen (the page that appears suddenly)

  • When entering personal or financial information, make sure the site is encrypted with SSL certificate by looking at the padlock, 'https', or a green address bar
